Music and Pain.

"I UNDERSTAND YOU!"-Built Upon the Sand, Stick to Your Guns.

Music in General:

To me, music is the best remedy for dealing with pain. When you feel as if you have no one, or you feel like the world is crashing down on you, music fills the empty portions in your life. It numbs the angst and blocks out the demons you’re fighting. It gives you a chance to breathe, step away from reality, and look at all the positive aspects in your life. Although it may seem cliché, music is a life saver. It will be there when people aren’t, it can relate to the trials you’re facing, it will provide you with some kind of hope.

My Music:

My whole life I’ve had a passion for music, loved to sing, it has always just had such an impact on me. When I became depressed and suicidal, I knew something had to be done. If I didn’t find a way to deal with the demons that were attacking me every second of every day, there would be no more of me. I didn’t want that. I refused to allow my loved ones to be inflicted with the same pain that I dealt with daily. Although I was ready to give up, ready to just end it all, a part of me still had hope. A part of me wanted to keep holding on and defeat all this hurt.

I began exploring different types of music: Classical, Rap, Hip/Hop, Indie, Alternative, etc. Nothing worked, nothing helped me. Then, I came across this new type of music, some would classify it as “screamo” or “emo music”, they had it all wrong though. This music, these singers, had so much passion in the worlds they spoke. They sang of my real life situations, their lyrics related to what I was dealing with. I instantly fell in love. This music was me, this music was my ticket to recovery. I soon realized that I didn’t need to self-harm, I didn’t need to bottle everything up, and I had found this new medicine that provided instant relief. It didn’t give me unneeded side effects, or cause me mood swings, it gave me a light. It gave me hope.

It was breathtaking and absolutely beautiful. One band in particular saved my life. Stick to Your guns. Now, I understand that if you don’t like this genre of music because maybe you cannot understand what they’re saying, or maybe it is too hardcore for you, I get that. This music isn’t for everyone. All I am asking though, is for you to look up these song lyrics and take them to heart. They have helped me, so why couldn’t they help you? A few songs that I recommend are: Built Upon the Sand, We Still Believe, and Amber. Three of my favorite songs by them are locoated on the side.
